Warning signs you’re being targeted by an identify thief

Welcome to NerdWallet’s SmartMoney podcast, where we answer your real-world money questions. This week’s question is from Andrew, who asks, “I’ve been thinking about signing up for one of those identity theft protection services, but I’m not sure if they’re really worth it. How much am I actually at risk of being a victim of identity theft, and will these services help me avoid identity theft?”

Online Scams You Need to Be Aware of — and How to Avoid ThemOnline scams are everywhere. Here’s how to identify them and avoid them.

Our take

Security experts say everyone’s at risk of identity theft, because so much of our personal information has been exposed in various database breaches. But the potential fallout ranges from minimal to horrific. If someone steals your credit card number, for example, you’re protected from having to pay the bogus charges once you report the fraud. If someone

Biden says will not hold campaign rallies due to pandemic

Wilmington (United States) (AFP) – US Democrat Joe Biden said Tuesday he will not hold presidential campaign rallies during the coronavirus pandemic, an extraordinary declaration that stands in stark contrast with Donald Trump who has already held large campaign gatherings.

“This is the most unusual campaign I think in modern history,” the former vice president said during a question-and-answer session with reporters in Delaware to discuss the pandemic and ways to mitigate its spread.

“I’m going to follow the doc’s orders — not just for me but for the country — and that means that I am not going to be holding rallies,” said Biden, adding he has not yet been tested for COVID-19.

It was not clear if Biden, 77, was referring to a personal physician who has recommended he stay off the trail out of health concerns for him and attendees, or the US government guidelines that urge

Sports Brands Need to Take Risks to Boost Business

Plain vanilla is the kiss of death.

Sporting goods brands and retailers need to be willing to take some risks in their design and merchandising to lure consumers to buy.

“A plain vanilla assortment means boring and the same as last year,” said Matt Powell, vice president and senior industry analyst for NPD Group. “There’s no surer way to kill a retail business.”

So despite fears that have come to the forefront during the pandemic that are causing companies to want to play it safe, Powell said they need to “take some risk and offer a provocative and exciting assortment.”

Powell made those comments as part of a webinar titled “Monitoring the Impact of COVID-19 and the Road to Recovery” for the Sports & Fitness Industry Association Tuesday afternoon.

Over the past few months, sports apparel and footwear have performed better than many

COVID-19 cases are rising in West Sacramento. Mayor explains what’s behind the surge

Few communities are immune to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, it seems. That’s of little consolation to Mayor Christopher Cabaldon of West Sacramento, where infection rates have risen dramatically in the past two weeks.

“The situation is very problematic,” Cabaldon said Tuesday. “It’s no comfort that it’s the case across the region and across the state.”

A month ago, West Sacramento was seeing one new case a day. Some days the city recorded no new cases at all, according to data compiled by Yolo County’s Health and Human Services Agency. The record for one day was six, reported in early April.

In the past few days, however, daily infections have risen significantly. The city had either 10 or 11 new cases reported on four separate days last week.

Cabaldon said many of the new cases are originating in private family gatherings — a belief echoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom

No social distancing or masks required for 4th of July event

For President Trump’s Independence Day fireworks celebration at Mount Rushmore, attendees will not be required to practise social distancing or wear masks, the state’s governor said.

In an interview with Fox News, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem was asked about health concerns being cited as a reason to cancel Fourth of July celebrations.

“In South Dakota we’ve told people to focus on personal responsibility, every one of them has the opportunity to make a decision that they’re comfortable with”, Governor Noem replied.

“We will have a large event on 3 July. We told those folks that have concerns that they can stay home but those who want to come and join us, we’ll be giving out free face masks, if they choose to wear one. But we won’t be social distancing.”

South Dakota has recorded more than 6,700 confirmed coronavirus cases and 91 deaths, according to data from Johns

Is it Safe to Date Again? Doctors Weigh In

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has placed many people’s love lives at a standstill for months. Even for adventurous virtual daters, the loss of IRL connections has them craving face-to-face interactions. So now, as some cities and states start to lift social distancing restrictions, many people are eagerly re-entering the dating world at full force. But even though restaurants are opening their doors and bars are pouring cocktails again, doctors and relationship experts suggest singles tiptoe back into dating with caution—and, in some cases, while wearing face masks.

“Depending on health, personal comfort, environment, and government regulations, wearing a face mask on dates can be advisable,” Dr. Carla Manly tells HelloGiggles. “That said, if successive dates with the same person are taking place, it may feel safe and appropriate not to wear a mask if the setting feels conducive to going mask-free.”

Wearing a face mask on a first date can

The Best High School Movies to Make You Feel All the Nostalgic Feels

From Cosmopolitan

From football games to lunchroom fights to ruthless competition for the title of prom king or queen, high school is filled with enough angst and Hollywood-level theatrics to keep things interesting year after year—and movie after movie. Who doesn’t love watching a coming-of-age melodrama filled with actors who are not-so-secretly well above the legal drinking age? Makes me wonder where all the guys with chiseled jawlines and good style were when I was in school, but that’s beside the point.

Sure, some high school movies tend to be a little, shall we say, larger than life—I mean, how many high schoolers just happen to find out they’re royalty à la Princess Diaries? But who cares! Watching all of those extremely complicated friendship (and romantic) dynamics play out on the big screen is like a familiar (albeit slightly triggering) hug. From oldies like Sixteen

  • Reddit is home to hundreds of NSFW and sexual kink communities that allow users to share experiences, ask for advice, and meet like-minded people in a non-judgmental space.

  • Before Reddit was founded in 2005, queer people created online communities using dial-up chat rooms. One of the earliest known is net.motss, which was created in 1983.

  • As Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have shut down “adult content,” Reddit has become known as the most sex-positive mainstream social media platform.

  • In a world where sex education falls short and largely ignores marginalized people, Reddit’s kink communities also act as an educational tool.

Florida Has 4th Worst Unemployment Recovery In Country

ACROSS FLORIDA — As recent outbreaks of the coronavirus in states like Florida, Texas and Arizona cause a new wave of shutdowns, MoveOn.org is calling on Congress to extend coronavirus emergency unemployment funding through the end of the year.

The petition has been signed by more than one million people so far.

Without an extension, unemployment benefits are set to expire on July 31.

“Many people who are laid off due to COVID-19 won’t find work for a very long time, maybe never because some jobs lost today won’t be coming back,” reads the petition. “People will need time and resources to learn and develop a new skill. By ending the $600 per week additional unemployment assistance too soon, we will certainly be dooming people to tragic futures. This will have far-reaching ramifications. We need to look out for each other during these unprecedented times. Please let’s help each other

Which Ones Make More Money Than You?

Although fans won’t be back in stadiums for the rest of this season’s Major League Baseball games, the mascots will be. The MLB reversed a ruling banning mascots from the park amid concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, the Associated Press reported. Mascots can now be in the stands, though they are not allowed on the field, which could possibly mean that mascot traditions like the Sausage Race in Milwaukee and the dashing Presidents in Washington won’t be able to take place. As for mascots from other leagues, including the NBA, their future remains more uncertain.

As the Phillie Phanatic, Mr. Met and other MLB mascots prepare to make enthusiastic returns to their stadiums, see how much bank these mascots make for their home team spirit — you’ll see that this odd job can pay pretty well.
