Rising from pandemic, the business success stories of tomorrow?

On Feb. 16, Marissa and Adam Goldstein launched Rafi Nova, a company selling backpacks for adventure travelers. Sustainably sourced, using textiles woven by Hmong women in Vietnam paid at a fair-trade rate, the backpacks might have been a thing. But the pandemic hit and domestic and international travel ground to a halt.

“Nobody was even leaving their house, let alone buying a $230 travel pack,” says Ms. Goldstein, whose business is in Needham, Massachusetts. “We probably launched a travel fashion company at the worst time in history.”

With few sales and no money left, the couple decided they at least could put their Vietnamese factory partners to work making face masks, which they could donate to front-line workers in the United States. “It wasn’t a business opportunity,” Ms. Goldstein says. “It was out of a sense of service.”

Then family and friends started asking if they could buy some of

The FTSE 100 is expected to open lower this morning amid frets over rising coronavirus infection rates at home and abroad, and a worries that the economic bounceback seen since lockdown lifted may not be sustained.

The blue chip index was forecast to open 30 points lower at 5,977 after a choppy week last week. Markets initially rose on a step up in M&A activity – notably Nvidia’s blockbuster takeover of tech giant ARM in the UK – before slipping back as European Covid infection rates marched up.

This week’s tone is set to be steered by central bankers with US Federal Reserve chairman Jay Powell set to appear several times across the Pond and Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey making an address over here.

Powell is in a tight spot with US president Donald Trump keen to talk up the state of the country

The two coaches sat in chairs behind the basket along the wall of the brick-lined gym at Lueders Park in Compton and pondered the what-ifs.

Months earlier, before the novel coronavirus outbreak halted his youth basketball season, 14-year-old Semaj Miller perfected his dribbling and made shot after shot on that court.

Miller already stood 6 feet 6. Derrick Cooper and Tony Thomas predicted future stardom. They know NBA talent when they see it.

Cooper mentored James Harden, the 2018 NBA most valuable player with the Houston Rockets, in youth basketball. Thomas coached San Antonio Spurs star DeMar

Hong Kong’s Education Bureau on Friday announced the suspension of all schools from Monday after a spike in locally transmitted coronavirus cases that has fuelled fears of a renewed community spread in the city.

Schools in the Asian financial hub have been mostly shut since February, with many having switched to online learning and lessons by conference call. Many international schools are already on summer break.

The city reported 42 new cases on Thursday, of which 34 were locally transmitted, marking the second consecutive day of rising local infections.

Some of the recent cases involved students and parents, said Education Secretary Kevin Yeung.

The total number of cases in the city since late January now stands at 1,366. Seven people

COVID-19 cases are rising in West Sacramento. Mayor explains what’s behind the surge

Few communities are immune to the recent surge in COVID-19 cases, it seems. That’s of little consolation to Mayor Christopher Cabaldon of West Sacramento, where infection rates have risen dramatically in the past two weeks.

“The situation is very problematic,” Cabaldon said Tuesday. “It’s no comfort that it’s the case across the region and across the state.”

A month ago, West Sacramento was seeing one new case a day. Some days the city recorded no new cases at all, according to data compiled by Yolo County’s Health and Human Services Agency. The record for one day was six, reported in early April.

In the past few days, however, daily infections have risen significantly. The city had either 10 or 11 new cases reported on four separate days last week.

Cabaldon said many of the new cases are originating in private family gatherings — a belief echoed by Gov. Gavin Newsom
